Bryan ISD Recognized for Conservation and Recycling

Careful planning for the construction of environmentally-friendly athletic turf at Merrill Green Stadium and Rudder High School earned Bryan ISD a 2013 Regional Solid Waste Planning Award from the Brazos Valley Council of Governments.

The new fields were constructed with advanced materials engineered for a surface that effectively drains water while cushioning players impacted by football tackles. The fields contain tiny fragments of rubber from 25,000 recycled tires.

Combined with other recycled rubber components, the fields contain nearly 300,000 pounds of recycled rubber. The advanced materials create a safer, more player-friendly surface that functions well and saves the district $22,000 annually in lower maintenance costs—all while keeping about 150 tons of
rubber out of area landfills.

Harry Francis, Bryan ISD’s director of athletics, accepted the award on behalf of the district.
